Common Sunscreen Toxicants

Finding a safe sunscreen can be a difficult task with so many on the market that claim to be safe and natural. The important part of finding a safe sunscreen is to investigate the ingredients contained which should always be located on the product.

Our investigation has found that many hazardous chemicals and toxins are routinely used in sunscreen formulations. NSA has detailed 5 of the most common and hazardous ingredients below:

Oxybenzone is a very hazardous chemical and is most commonly used in the worst rated sunscreen products we have researched. It is carcinogenic and toxic to the immune, reproductive and endocrine (skin) systems. It is also allergenic and a penetration enhancer. This chemical should most definitely be avoided.

Fragrance is a widely used allergenic and immune system toxicant with concerns for brain toxicity also. More information at

Triethanolamine (Lauryl Sulfate)is a particularly dangerous known human carcinogenic (cancer causing) and immune system toxicant.More information at

Disodium EDTA is another dangerous known human carcinogenic and immune system toxicant as well as a penetration enhancer priming the endocrine (skin) system to make absorption of other chemicals easier.More information at

Isopropanol Derivatives is a known irritant to the skin, eyes and lungs as well as emerging concerns for brain and organ toxicity.

This disturbing account of highly common sunscreen ingredients is only

the tip of the iceberg! There are many other hazardous toxins listed as ingredients in many well known and popular brands, including those marketed as ‘safe’ and ‘natural’ and those for children.

It is extremely important that, while seeking protection from the dangers of sun exposure, we must choose a sunscreen that is truly safe of our skin and our bodies. Informed choice is the best way to do this.
