Suave Hair Conditioner Review: Rating 0.5/10 Rated A Highly Toxic Hair Care Product in the Conditioner Category in the 2006 Natural Hair Care Product Review Cancer Proven | Cancer Link | Reproductive Toxins | Safety Violation | Penetration Agent | Untested Chemicals | Harmful Toxins | Animal Tested | Fragrance/ Allergen | Propylene Glycol | Parabens | Disodium EDTA | Introduction Suave Hair Conditioner is a highly toxic hair care product. This product's official name is Suave Performance Series Shampoo Plus Conditioner. The parent company Unilever had sales of 49.9 billion dollars in 2004. In the interests of disclosure this corporate behemoth was recently involved in a mercury scandal.
Positives? In a word, none. The Suave Professionals Conditioner does not meet any natural ingredient parameter. In fact, if you were to inject this chemical cocktail into someone's bloodstream you would be locked up. I do not say this lightly, as there are penetration agents - SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, TETRASODIUM EDTA, PROPYLENE GLYCOL - in this product that enables it to pass into your bloodstream unhindered. Negatives The Suave Professionals Conditioner is quite literally a chemical soup with many of the ingredients never even tested for safety according to the C.I.R. - Cosmetic Ingredient Review. The chemicals that are certified by the C.I.R have been tested on animals. Cancer Causing Agents The only area that Suave Professionals Conditioner excels is in the toxic parameters. It meets 9 of 12 toxic parameters, including the most serious ones. This product contains a known human carcinogen - METHENAMINE. This chemical is a direct cancer causing agent. Cancer Linkage This product contains these highly toxic ingredients, DMDM HYDANTOIN, COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE which have been linked to cancer in animal tests. Reproductive Toxicity This product contains one ingredient - TITANIUM DIOXIDE - linked to reduced fertility and a reduced chance for a full term healthy pregnancy. Penetration Enhancers Also present are penetration enhancers: SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, TETRASODIUM EDTA These agents work to infiltrate the skin membrane - i.e. penetration enhancer - and in doing so may increase exposures to carcinogens. Untested Chemicals Suave Performance Series Shampoo Plus Conditioner contains chemicals that have not been assessed for safety in cosmetic formulas by the C.I.R. These chemicals are: CITRIC ACID, GUAR HYDROXYPROPYLTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE, DIMETHICONOL, MICA, D&C YELLOW 10, TEA DODECYLPHENYLSULFONATE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, FD&C BLUE 1. Fragrance Of concern to sensitive people is the presence of - the vaguely termed - FRAGRANCE. This is an unspecified mixture of chemicals commonly used throughout the industry that have been linked to immune and nervous system toxicity.
Recommendation My advice is this, Don't Believe The Hype or the slick marketing by Unilever. Stay away from Suave Performance Series Shampoo Plus Conditioner. If you use it now I strongly urge you to throw it in the trash. Don't fill the coffers of a mega corp that KNOWINGLY uses toxic ingredients in their so called skin care products. Vote with your wallet and maybe Unilver in time will learn not to put their customer's health at risk. Certified Organic Hair Conditioner? If you are someone who likes the peace of mind that your natural hair care products are certified organic I would refer you to the top rating organic hair conditioner. Voice Your Opinion!
