Ingesting Bisphenol A through skin care applied to our skin...
Blog post posted by Natural Skincare Authority on January 14, 2010 at 3:00pm
Hello fellow skincarers,
Following on from yesterday's article regarding Bisphenol A, I decided to find out more about the possible affects of Bisphenol A in relation to cosmetic and skin care packaging.
Based on what we found out yesterday, Bisphenol A is a toxic chemical, interrupting normal hormonal activity in the body. It has been linked to cancer, obesity, type II diabetes and early on-set of puberty and is definitely a chemical that needs to be avoided for good health.
The fact that Bisphenol A has been banned from use as a skin care ingredient (and has been since November 2006) does not mean that we are not being exposed to this harmful chemical.
Bisphenol A is used to formulate the coating for the inside of plastic bottles and cans, it's purpose being to prevent corrosion of the bottle or can. However, although it achieves this goal effectively, Bisphenol A has been shown to leach into whatever is in the bottle or can over time meaning that it is then part of the ingredients in the product you are eating, drinking or using on your skin.
Therefore, the above ban on Bisphenol A as an ingredient in skin care is a joke! The FDA is fully aware of the fact that leaching of this chemical occurs but have made statements to the affect that it is at 'safe levels'. This is the same government body (sponsered largely by commercial industry) that has not tested 89.5% of the 10500 ingredients currently being used in skin care every day!
Is Bisphenol A leaching into our skin care products? Yes, I would say that seems apparent.
Is this dangerous to our health? Well, what do you think? Some say 'yes', some say 'no'.
It appears to me that while Bisphenol A is considered a hazardous chemical (which it is) and while it is leaching into our products (which it is), then it is a problem. Just as all other hazardous chemicals in skin care are. This is just another one!
Another important issue is, what is the cumulative effect of this multitude of chemicals in products we apply and consume every day?
Stay tuned for more on cumulation of chemicals...
Have your say - what are your thoughts on Bisphenol A and chemicals in skin care?
