Paul Mitchell Hair Conditioner Review: Rating 1.1/10 Rated A Highly Toxic Hair Care Product in the Conditioner Category in the 2006 Natural Hair Care Product Review Cancer Proven | Cancer Link | Reproductive Toxins | Safety Violation | Penetration Agent | Untested Chemicals | Harmful Toxins | Animal Tested | Fragrance/ Allergen | Propylene Glycol | Parabens | Disodium EDTA | Introduction Paul Mitchell Hair Conditioner is a highly toxic hair care product. This product's official name is Paul Mitchell The Rinse Instant Moisture Balancing Conditioner. The parent company John Paul Mitchell Systems had sales of 800 million dollars in 2004. Positives? In a word, none. The Paul Mitchell Balancing Conditioner does not meet any natural ingredient parameter. In fact, if you were to inject this chemical cocktail into someone's bloodstream you would be locked up. I do not say this lightly, as there are penetration agents - SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, TETRASODIUM EDTA, PROPYLENE GLYCOL - in this product that enables it to pass into your bloodstream unhindered. Negatives The Paul Mitchell Balancing Conditioner is quite literally a chemical soup with many of the ingredients never even tested for safety according to the C.I.R. - Cosmetic Ingredient Review. Animal Testing? The chemicals that are certified by the C.I.R have been tested on animals. This is contrary to claims made on the company website, where they say they "philosophically oppose" animal testing. They may not test animals directly in their labs, however many of these chemicals have been previously tested on animals. This is the only way the CIR can determine human safety parameters.Yet another company that lies through its teeth and gets away with it. Cancer Causing Agents The only area that Paul Mitchell Hair Conditioner excels is in the toxic parameters. It meets 9 of 12 toxic parameters, including the most serious ones. This product contains a known human carcinogen - TRIETHANOLAMINE. This chemical is a direct cancer causing agent. Cancer Linkage This product contains these highly toxic ingredients, PEG-STEARATES, PEG-8 DISTEARATE, DIAZOLIDINYL UREA which has been linked to cancer in animal tests. Breast Cancer Risk This product contains one ingredient - METHYLPARABEN and POLYPARABEN - linked to breast cancer in women. This study was reported by the BBC Sunday 11 January 2004. Methylparaben is also a Xenoestrogen, mimicking the sex hormone estrogen. Penetration Enhancers Also present are penetration enhancers: PROPYLENE GLYCOL DICAPRATE These agents work to infiltrate the skin membrane - i.e. penetration enhancer - and in doing so may increase exposures to carcinogens. Untested Chemicals Paul Mitchell The Rinse Instant Moisture Balancing Conditioner contains chemicals that have not been assessed for safety in cosmetic formulas by the C.I.R. These chemicals are: GLUTAMIC ACID, PPG-1 TRIDECETH-6, DIMETHICONE BISAMINO HYDROXYPROPYL COPOLYOL, CYSTEINE, TYROSINE, COCODIMONIUM HYDROXYPROPYL HYDROLYZED WHEAT PROTEIN, LEUCINE, PLANTAGO MAJOR (PLANTAIN), DICAPRYLATE/ DICAPRATE, HYDROLYZED WHEAT PROTEIN, SYMPHYTUM OFFICINALE (COMFREY), GLYCINE SOJA (SOYBEAN) OIL, POLYQUATERNIUM-37. Fragrance Of concern to sensitive people is the presence of - the vaguely termed - FRAGRANCE. This is an unspecified mixture of chemicals commonly used throughout the industry that have been linked to immune and nervous system toxicity. Recommendation My advice is this, Don't Believe The Hype or the slick marketing by Paul Mitchell . Stay away from Paul Mitchell The Rinse Instant Moisture Balancing Conditioner. If you use it now I strongly urge you to throw it in the trash. Don't fill the coffers of a mega corp that KNOWINGLY uses toxic ingredients in their so called skin care products. Vote with your wallet and maybe Unilever in time will learn not to put their customer's health at risk. Certified Organic Hair Conditioner?
