Lynx deodorant ingredients - how toxic are they?
Blog post posted by Natural Skincare Authority on January 20, 2010 at 10:45pm
Following on from yesterday's post about Lynx deodorant, we thought we'd have a bit of a closer look at the ingredients and just how toxic this deodorant is...
Let's look at each ingredient, one by one, as listed on the Lynx deodorant bottle.
SD Alcohol 40B (AKA Alcohol Denatured): This ingredient is basically a chemical solvent. It is linked to cancer, organ system toxicity, and in a penetration enhancer. This means that when applied to the skin, the structure of the chemical enhances the penetation of the product into the skin layers.
This is a huge safety concern considering that this and other chemicals linked to cancer are more able to penetrate into the deeper epidermic layers.
Fragrance (Parfum): A well known immune system toxicant, with concerns emerging about neurotoxicity, this is considered a high risk chemical! This is used to mask smells. Interestingly though, many have commented that body odour eventually finds its way to the surface, and mixed with the chemical smell of Lynx and othe similar products, a strong, stale smell seems to emanate from their bodies, which is offensive anyway!
Others have commented to NSA that they find the smells of these types of deodorants offensive at application! We have had some feedback that people have to leave the house when a housemate sprays this chemical cocktail on their bodies.
Butane: This is the propellant used to propel the spray from the bottle and onto your skin. This chemical has many strong concerns relating to immunotoxicity, organ system toxicity, irritation to the skin, eyes and lungs, and a newer concern around persistence and bioaccumulation.
This newer concern means that even stopping use of this toxic deodorant may not be enough to prevent damage from it as this Butane may have the ability to accumulate in the human body and therefore persist even after stopping use. This could affect your future health!
Hydroflourocarbon 152A: This chemical is also a propellant although with much less safety concerns at present. However, there is cancer and organ system toxicity concerns which are still being investigated.
Isopropyl Myristate: This is a perfume and solvent and carries a low rsk associated with organ system toxicity and irriation to the skin, eyes and lungs. Another product with emerging concerns and requiring much further investigation to know the full affects.
Well, based on this updated review of these ingredients, I am certain this remains a high risk product.
Keep sending your feedback via NSA or leave us a post about your experiences!
