Aussie Shampoo Review: Rating 1.1/10 Rated A Highly Toxic Hair Care Product in the Shampoo Category in the 2006 Natural Hair Care Product Review Cancer Proven | Cancer Link | Reproductive Toxins | Safety Violation | Penetration Agent | Untested Chemicals | Harmful Toxins | Animal Tested | Fragrance/ Allergen | Propylene Glycol | Sodium Lauryl Sulfate | Misleading Advertising | Introduction Aussie shampoo is highly toxic hair care product. This product's official name is Aussie Mega Shampoo. The parent company Proctor & Gamble had sales of 55 billion dollars in 2004. While using "Aussie" as its brand name may seem cute, in reality it is the only thing it does have in common with Australia. P&G have quite simply put the "sham" back in shampoo. In the interests of disclosure this corporate behemoth is no stranger to toxic scandals. New tests have confirmed TBT poison in Proctor & Gamble Baby products: as reported by Greenpeace. Positives There is nothing positive about this product according to the ingredient label. The Aussie Mega Shampoo does not meet any natural ingredient parameter. In fact, if you were to inject this chemical concoction into someone else's bloodstream you would be locked up. I do not say this lightly, as there are penetration agents, PROPYLENE GLYCOL and SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE in this product that enables it to pass into your bloodstream unhindered. Tested on Animals? It is not certified organic and it uses synthetic chemicals that have been tested on animals. Proctor & Gamble outsource's animal testers so as not to get their hands dirty. The fact that it is not certified organic - obviously - means that there is a possibility the product contains G.M.O - genetically modified organisms - and pesticides. Negatives The Aussie shampoo is quite literally a chemical soup with many of the ingredients never even tested for safety according to the C.I.R. - Cosmetic Ingredient Review. The chemicals that are certified by the C.I.R have been tested on animals. Cancer Linkage This product contains these highly toxic ingredients, COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE which has been linked to cancer in animal tests. Reproductive Toxicity This product contains one ingredient - FD&C Yellow 5 - linked to reduced fertility and a reduced chance for a full term healthy pregnancy. Penetration Enhancers Also present are penetration enhancers: PROPYLENE GLYCOL and SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE. These agents work to infiltrate the skin membrane - i.e. penetration enhancer - and in doing so may increase exposures to carcinogens. Untested Chemicals Aussie Mega Shampoo contains chemicals that have not been assessed for safety in cosmetic formulas by the C.I.R. These chemicals are: CITRIC ACID, ALOE BARBADENSIS (ALOE VERA) EXTRACT, FD&C YELLOW 5, F&DC RED 4, RICINOLEAMIDOPROPYL ETHYLDIMONIUM ETHOSULFATE, ISOSTEARAMIDOPROPYL ETHYLDIMONIUM ETHOSULFATE, ANIGOZANTHOS FLAVIDUS (KANGAROO PAW) FLOWER EXTRACT, PANAX GINSENG (GINSENG) EXTRACT, SODIUM STYRENE/ ACRYLATES/ DIVINYLBENZENE COPOLYMER, AMMONIUM NONOXYNOL-4-SULFATE, SEA KELP EXTRACT, TROPAEOLUM MAJUS (NASTURTIUM) EXTRACT, CARICA PAPAYA (PAPAYA) FRUIT EXTRACT, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) EXTRACT, GLYCERIN, ANTHEMIS NOBILIS (CHAMOMILE) EXTRACT, Fragrance Of concern to sensitive people is the presence of - the vaguely termed - FRAGRANCE. This is an unspecified mixture of potentially hundreds of chemicals commonly used throughout the industry. Some problems caused by these chemicals are headaches, dizziness, rash, violent coughing, vomiting and skin irritation. Parabens Aussie Mega Shampoo also contains PARABENS: methylparaben and propylparaben, chemicals that have been recently linked to breast cancer in women. This study was reported by the BBC Sunday 11 January 2004. Methylparaben is also a Xenoestrogen, mimicking the sex hormone estrogen. Recommendation My advice is this. Don't fall for these fake "natural looking" products pushed on you by Proctor and Gamble. Stay away from Aussie Shampoo. If you use it now I strongly urge you to throw it in the trash. Don't fill the coffers of a mega corp that KNOWINGLY uses toxic ingredients in their so called skin care products. Vote with your wallet and maybe Proctor and Gamble in time will learn not to put their customer's health at risk. Certified Organic Alternative Shampoo If you are someone who likes the peace of mind that your natural skin care products are certified organic I would refer you to the top rating herbal shampoo, a product actually made in Australia.
